Assumptions & References

  • Credit utilization is calculated as a percentage of revolving credit used versus total available revolving credit.
  • Both overall (aggregate) and per-card utilization ratios are considered by credit bureaus (FICO, VantageScore).
  • FICO recommends keeping utilization below 30%; consumers with the highest scores typically stay below 10%.
  • Credit utilization accounts for approximately 30% of a FICO credit score — the second largest factor after payment history.
  • Utilization is typically reported to bureaus on your statement closing date, not your payment due date.
  • Installment loans (mortgages, auto loans) are generally excluded from revolving credit utilization calculations.
